Mahatma Gandhi
Mahatma Gandhi was born on 2nd October, 1869, in Porbandar, Gujarat, India to the proud parents Karamchand and Putliba Gandhi. Mahatma Gandhi was the youngest son of the couple. Father of Mahatma Gandhi was a Diwan of the Royal court of Porbandar. The name given to Mahatma Gandhi by his parents was Mohandas. From the early childhood he was taught the lessons of honesty and truthfulness. At the age of 13 he was married with Kasturba. After finishing his primary education in India Gandhi ji went to London for the higher studies. He came back to India after obtaining a degree in law in the year 1891. In the year 1893 he went to South Africa on a contract to do some legal work.
The South Africa metamorphosed him into the personality he later donned. He stayed in South Africa for a long time and he came across many incidents of racial injustices met out to him and these slowly transformed his personality. South Africa was the place where Gandhi ji developed his potent weapons like civil disobedience movements and the Satyagraha-non violence. Gandhi ji tried and tested these weapons with success in South Africa many times. In the year 1915 he came back to India and associated himself to the ongoing National movement. Within a very short period he attained the prominence. The great Indian philosopher and writer of the contemporary time Gurudev Rabindranath Tagore gave him the title of “Mahatma” which became so popular among the masses that his first name Mohandas lost the prominence.
Mahatma Gandhi led the Indian masses in many movements and rallies and negotiated with the British Raj on number of occasions. The movements he used to lead always got the support and huge participation of the masses. Soon the British took the cognizance of the matter and Gandhi ji was being jailed to crush the movement. But Gandhi ji relentlessly carried on the crusade and thrown the British out of the country. Some of the famous mass movements led by Gandhi ji are Dandi March, Bardoli Satyagraha, Quit India Movement etc.
He took out a news paper with a name and style of Young India in which he use to write about the atrocities and injustice met out to the Indians by the British Raj. The attack continued till the British left the Indian soil.
Gandhi ji wanted a united and strong India after the independence but India got divided giving birth to Pakistan. This pained the Mahatma; the riots which followed the partition shattered him and forced him to take a fast unto death or till the violence stopped.
Gandhi ji never opted for any political power or supremacy, after the independence Gandhi ji decided to stay in Delhi. In the year 1948, Nathuram Godse, a fanatic killed him when he was going for his regular evening prayers on January, 30.
People of India gave him the title of “The Father of The Nation” to honor his services to the nation.
