Free Flight Models – Aero modelling
The type of models come under this category are of three types in general the first is the gliders and second is the rubber powered models and the third is free flight engine model. The Gliders are those models which do not use any engine as the source of power after making the model the model is towed up in the air either manually or by using the battery operated winches. One more type of gliders is also present and description would be incomplete without them. These models are known as the slope soaring sailplanes and basically there is no difference between a slope soaring sailplane and a tow line glider except the slope soaring sailplane is launched in the hilly regions by hand.
Other category of the free flight models which use rubber power, are those models where the power to rotate the airscrew is derived with the help of the rubber strands. They can be further divided into two categories the first is the general rubber powered and other is indoor or the peanut scale models.
The rubber powered models are needed to be very light in weight and mostly they are covered with the help of light weight tissue papers. If they are needed to be painted, then they are painted in such a way that the paint does not make any significant change in the weight of the model.
The peanut scale models are used mainly for the indoor flying. These models are very light in weight and very small in size.
They are also covered with the light weight tissue paper and precautions for the coloring are the same as in rubber powered models.

The last type of the models in this category is the engine powered models. There are various types of engines are available and some of the popular engines are Diesel, Glow Plug, Jetex, miniature turbo jet engines and electric motors. Type of the air screws also differ and may be of regular or the ducted fan type. The types of models in this category are mainly of two types – the first is free flight duration models and the other is free flight semi- scale models. The free flight duration models are mainly of the same kind like the gliders except with a difference that there the power is delivered by the help of an engine. The engine power makes the model more vulnerable for loosing them during the flight therefore the engine is allowed to run for a predetermined period and then it is turned off. To achieve this there are two methods available one is the use of the timers to stop the engine or the use of pre calibrated fuel tanks.

Other type of the free flight models are the semi scale models there is no difference between a semi scale and a duration model except that the semi scale models are the near perfect replicas of their original ones.
When these semi scale models fly they really feast for the eyes. Now days for the free flight and free flight semi scale models generally the electric power is used for the versatility and ease of use. The electric motors are very easy to switch off as compared to their most counterparts.
