Ship Modeling

Like the aero modeling ship modeling is also a very interesting hobby, here we indulge ourselves to make the models of the ships which move in the water like the real ships and boats. Before proceeding further it is to be known to you that like the aerodynamics play a vital role in the aero modeling few principals play vital role in the ship modeling also. The knowledge of which is beneficial to move further in this subject. The water bodies or the ships displace water equal to the weight of the body concerned and this is very true in case of the model ships and the boats. Every ship has a thick line painted black or red which indicates that when the ship is submerged in the water up to that line, no further load is to be added in the ship to enable it to float.

Otherwise the ship may get sunk in the water. This line is known as the Plimsoll line. One more thing to remember that is the balancing of the ship so that ship model stands absolutely vertical in the water. If it is tilted towards left or right then there are chances that while moving

the ship may sink in the water.

The medium of the construction of the ship may vary from the spruce wood to plastics to the fiberglass and the power for movement is provided either by sails or by the use of the electric motors or diesel or glow plug engines as per the requirement and type of the model. In India this hobby is also in very primitive stage and there is no great deal of awareness about it. However Kits to make the models are available in the select hobby shops. To make the models of your choice however you can refer to the Jane’s Warship Recognition Guide.

The ship models can be divided in few categories as below:

Static Models
Free Moving Models
Radio Controlled Models
